Sydney, April 8, 2009 AEST (ABN Newswire) - Queensland Gas Company's former Managing Director, Richard Cottee, has been recognised as a 'legend' of the Australian oil and gas industry after being awarded the title at the Legends in Oil and Gas awards function held in Sydney.

This year's event which was convened at the Hilton, Sydney was host to over 20 ASX listed oil and gas companies and related exhibitors and involved over 30 presentation by companies and industry professionals. The event attracted over 400 representatives from the investment and banking sectors. This year's program also included several one-on-one meeting rooms which were fully booked back to back with companies and prospective investors.

Cottee, joined QGC as managing director in 2003, and was last night recognised by his peers and the wider business community for transforming the company from a fledgling explorer to Australia's largest coal seam gas company with a portfolio of more than 1000 petajoules of commercial gas reserves.

Cottee also pioneered the development of new less carbon-intensive forms of energy to help fuel the growth of Australian industry.

Cottee said he felt humbled by the award, which he accepted at the Excellence in Oil and Gas conference at Sydney's Hilton Hotel.

"Obviously whatever success I had has been a combination of good luck, identifying those opportunities and all of the loyalties from a lot of people who had faith with sticking with me for a long period of time," Cottee said.

In November last year, at the company's annual meeting, directors and shareholders took the opportunity to thank and farewell Richard Cottee.

Cottee said that it was important that he did not have an ongoing role during the takeover.

"I think it's important that you learn to open doors when they're available and close them firmly," he said.

"It was important both for the LNG project itself and the rest of the staff that I walked out as soon as it was over."

He said he did not imagine himself being around the garden for the rest of his life and believed there was still a "bit of life in the old dog".

The Legend in Oil and Gas Award 2009 was a part of the Resourceful Event's Excellence in Oil and Gas 2009 investment forum. The two day program showcased some of the best opportunities in oil and gas investment from Australia and overseas while bringing leaders in the oil and gas industry together with institutional, professional and private investors in an highly-focused resource investment forum.
